What is D.A.V.I.S.?
D.A.V.I.S. is an entirely student designed and developed Unreal Tournament 3 Total Conversion Mod. It takes the sci-fi, action-packed Unreal Tournament 3 video game and turns it into a first person, point-and-click adventure set in an abandoned 1950's utopian, suburban town. This project was implemented by Chico State Game Studios over the course of 3 semesters from Fall 2008 to Fall 2009.
The first semester of the project was spent in pre-production. The backstory, characters, levels, gameplay, puzzles, look & feel, and design document were generated and revised by a creative team of 6 senior students.
Production took place during the second and third semesters of the project. The development team ranged from 40-54 people at any given time across 9 different departments. By the end of the project, over 70 separate individuals had contributed to D.A.V.I.S. at one point or another.
What is Chico State Game Studios?
Chico State Game Studios (CSGS) is the student run organization that created D.A.V.I.S.
CSGS was founded in 2004 by students of California State University Chico's Applied Computer Graphics Department in an effort to meet the needs of students looking for careers in the video game industry that were not met by their regular classes. CSGS is designed to emulate an industry game studio as closely as possible in everything from team structure to pipelines.
The goal is to provide students with:
- Industry-like experience
- Practice working and communicating in large teams
- Networking oportunities with their peers
- Experiencing the difficulties of making games
- The opportunity to refine their skills in a particular field
- Having fun making a game that they would want to play themselves
